Ford certainly made quite the splash during the 2014 Detroit auto show with the new Ford F-150 pickup, and a huge part of the truck’s lightning rod effect can be traced to its nearly all-aluminum construction. Below are some of the important things you must know about this new Ford truck:
More than 90% of the F-150’s cab aluminum, and the bed is aluminum. The only notable steel component in the truck are the mounting rods for fitting bolt-on parts, the majority of the firewall, the frame, the door latches and hinges, body rivets, and the cross-door side-impact beams. By the way, the steel firewall is used because steel has excellent vibration, noise, and harshness-quelling characteristics.
Among the F-150’s slicker features is its near-flush-fitting sliding rear window. The glass is indeed bisected by a pair of pillars which support the sliding window mechanism. This technology has not changed in decades, and while it works, it does not look good. The new Ford F-150’s rear window appears to float within the rear glass, thanks to a sliding mechanism mounted in the truck away from view.
